The Dos and Don’ts of Networking at Team Building Events: How to Make Genuine Connections (Without Being Awkward)

Networking at team building events can be a valuable opportunity to make connections and expand your professional circle. However, it’s easy to fall into common networking pitfalls that can make the experience awkward and ineffective. As event planners, we’ve seen it all. So, we’re here to share some insights and tips on how to navigate the networking scene with confidence, authenticity, and a dash of humor.

 DODON’T
1Approach with an Open Mind and Positive Attitude   Networking events can be intimidating, but remember, everyone is in the same boat. Approach the event with an open mind and a positive attitude. Smile, be approachable, and radiate enthusiasm. Your positive energy will make it easier for others to engage with you.  Be a Networking Shark   We’ve all encountered those individuals who swoop in, collect as many business cards as possible, and move on without a genuine connection. Don’t be a networking shark. Take the time to have meaningful conversations and show genuine interest in others. Quality connections trump quantity.
2Have Your Elevator Pitch Ready… with a Twist   Prepare a concise and compelling elevator pitch that summarizes who you are and what you do. However, spice it up with a touch of humor or a memorable anecdote. Stand out from the crowd by infusing your pitch with personality, making it more engaging and memorable.  Monopolize Conversations   While it’s important to share about yourself, remember that networking is a two-way street. Avoid dominating conversations and take the time to listen actively. Show genuine interest in others, ask thoughtful questions, and create a dialogue. Remember, it’s not just about promoting yourself but building meaningful connections.
3Utilize Icebreakers… with a Twist of Humor   Icebreakers are great for initiating conversations. Take traditional icebreakers and add a humorous twist to make them more enjoyable. For example, instead of the standard “What do you do?”, try asking something lighthearted like, “If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?” It sparks laughter and opens up interesting conversations.  Stay Glued to Familiar Faces   Stepping out of your comfort zone is essential for effective networking. While it’s tempting to stick with familiar colleagues or friends, make an effort to branch out. Challenge yourself to meet new people, join group activities, and engage with attendees from different industries and backgrounds.
How to Make Genuine Connections

Networking at team building events doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By following these dos and avoiding the don’ts, you can make genuine connections, have meaningful conversations, and create lasting impressions. So, bring your positive energy, polish that elevator pitch, and sprinkle some humor into your interactions. Remember, networking can be both productive and enjoyable.
